Students of Chisago Lakes Baptist School proved that reading can be lots of fun! The elementary school’s “I Love to Read” month began January 8th. The morning began with a magic show called “Amazing Science,” presented by local professional magician, Norm Barnhart. Several students were invited to help with the tricks, and all were amazed as Norm related that magic is science.

Each class read the book, Railway Children, an adaptation of the book by Edith Nesbit. Daily prizes were awarded to the first student who found a small train that was hidden throughout the school. For ten minutes each day, students were invited to “stop, drop, and read.” Occasionally a mystery reader read a selection from a well- known book over the loudspeaker. Each week, the names of children who returned their reading logs were put into a drawing for one of over 75 books that were given away.

Students read 72,101 minutes outside of class, surpassing the school goal of 50,000 minutes in just three weeks. This year, kids from six homeschooled families joined the Read-a-thon. On Friday, February 2nd these eager readers were rewarded with a Pajama Day celebration, which included watching two episodes of “Adventures in Odyssey” while enjoying popcorn and pop.

Natalie Norman, 5th grade, won first place and topped the charts by reading 4783 minutes and received a new 2018 Guinness Book of World Records. Ava Lee, 6th grade, came in second reading 3660 minutes, and third place went to James Rutten, 2nd grade, reading 3360 minutes. Top readers for each grade level were: Adalyn Gunderson, K4 preschool; Jenny Rutten, kindergarten; Lincoln Jewson, 1st grade; James Rutten, 2nd grade; Franklin Jewson and Nolan Anderson, 3rd grade; Caleb Brink, 4th grade; Natalie Norman, 5thgrade, and Ava Lee, 6th grade.
